Hells Wives 139, Dangerous Curves 87? Hells yeah!

Hells Wives took on Dangerous Curves last Saturday night in front of a packed stand at ASB Stadium, and the girlz did not disappoint their home fans! It was a strongly fought bout with some very solid walls on both sides, but Hells Wives had the edge with a bigger bench and some fine jamming by Silence, Axl Slash-R and Tan-ya Hyde, and the points soon racked up!

The comments from our crowd was that it was a great game to watch – we’re really noticing that roller derby is starting to attract a growing fanbase here in Whangarei!

Many thanks to Mount Milita Derby Crew for making the trip up, and as always a huge thank you to our refs, NSO’s, volunteers, family, friends and fans 😀

Next up: Hells Wives vs Hibiscus Coast Roller‘s Bella Mafia, ASB Stadium, 27th July.

Recap! Hells Wives vs Dangerous Curves…

Saturday morning bright (well, some of us were…) and early it was off to Tauranga for our first bout of the year in three super fast minivans. With Pyscho Sis and Skatanic Mechanic leading the way in our much needed luggage truck it was a long four and a half hour haul south to our destination with several pit stops along the way.

8th Deadly Sin especially made an impression at McDonald’s at Drury BP Motorway Service Centre and of course who could forget the Mad Cow van at Matamata.

You just had to be there…

Once settled in our motel (we can highly recommend Fountain Court Motel, just not when 50 derby lovers are staying there all at once, we might disturb your sleep a little) it was off to Queen Elizabeth II Stadium to catch the curtain opener of Mt Militia’s Violent Fems vs Wanganui’s River City Rollers.

Then it was time for the Hells Wives to take the floor and take on Dangerous Curves. They had beaten Hells Wives 63-178 last year, but this year? It was gonna be different. There were impenetrable walls, there were tactics and skills and everything that our Head Coach Axl Slash-r had been drumming into us at practice was put IN to practice. Our jammers got through again and again and the more our Hells Wives Barmy Army shouted and chanted and yelled the more the score started to ramp up and up until the final score: an amazing, first ever, incredibly well fought win to Hells Wives, 140-81!!!

Celebrations went well into the night, with some karaoke, leg wrestling and much general derby mutual appreciation between teams, then Sunday, after lots of coffee and bearing up under hangovers, it was time to hit the road again for the journey back to Whangarei.

A huge thanks you to our hosts MMDC, refs, NSO’s and support staff and of course our completely awesome Hells Wives Barmy Army who were a lot bigger and just as mighty as last time!

Next up? It’s the first home game of the season; an exhibition bout at ASB Stadium in Kensington on the 19th of May! See ya there!

They’re calling it a CONVOY….

This weekend Northland Nightmares are hitting the road in Rentacheapy’s complete stock of minivans for an epic roadtrip to sunny Tauranga!

Our first game of the season is a repeat of our last game of 2011: Hells Wives vs Mount Militia’s Dangerous Curves but this time we’ve got a Hells Wives Barmy Army Support Crew almost four times bigger than last time!

We’re so excited, Saturday the 14th of April cannot come soon enough….

A Roller Derby Roadtrip…

It’s official: the next best thing after derby? Derby road trips! It was Northland Nightmares’ last game of the season (and our only away game) and last Saturday morning the Hells Wives team and dedicated supporters hit the road for the five hour haul to Tauranga to play Mt Militia Derby Crew‘s Dangerous Curves at Queen Elizabeth II Stadium.

After settling into luxurious accomodation at The Golden Grove Holiday Park, it was time to check out the track and prepare for the game…

And the game? It was really tough and Hells Wives fought it out to the end, but our (much-improved) walls just couldn’t stop their awesome jammers and the final score was 63-178 😦

But, the good news is that reports from experienced spectators say there was definite improvement in strategy from our last bout, something that we will be working hard to improve on over the next few months! It’s not just about how good your physical skills are, it’s the mental ones that will win you the game – and that’s why derby ROCKS 🙂

Thanks to the awesome Mt Militia Derby Crew for hosting us and a big thanks to our amazing Hells Wives Barmy Army (“we may ave bin small, but we were mighty”) for travelling down to support us!

We can’t wait for the next derby road trip so rrrroll on next season!

Northland Nightmares Roller Girlz, coming to a stadium near you…
