Here it is folks – the last game of the season for Northland Nightmares – a mixed game of players from our league and across NZ plus the added bonus of seeing our littlest terrors The Hell Razors (plus invited guests) take to the track. All proceeds of this bout will go to Rape Crisis Whangarei, we will also be collecting on the night for this brilliant cause close to our hearts, we believe in empowering women to overcome all obstacles and Rape Crisis do an amazing job of helping those in the direst of needs.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our fans for supporting us this year – there have been some big changes in the league and we are humbled by your continued faith in us, we also couldn’t do it without help from Dominos Pizza, ASB Stadium, Fast Signz, Wards Music, Steve Jennens Engineering, Fizeo Works, Oxford Trust, Pub Charity, Jesse Rose, Stil Vodka plus all our helpers, friends and family.
Look for us out and about in Whangarei during the summer months, we will be doing a number of outdoor displays and parades including the Whangarei City parade on 1st November.
On a bitterly cold winters night Rotorua’s Motley Crew from the Sulphur City Steam Rollers league felt the lick of flame from the Northland Nightmares A team – Hells Wives.
Final Score Hells Wives 228 Motley Crew 96.
No-one quite knew what to expect from the little known Motley Crew, we knew they had been training hard despite not much bout time and we knew they are the best dressed roller derby team in NZ at the moment, we found out their training has worked and with a few more bouts under their belts they will be a force to be reckoned with.
The first half started hard and fast, Motley Crew gave it their all and came out fighting tough, at one point in the first half there were only 20 points in it but Hells Wives kept up with their strategy, kept it tight and ground Motley Crew down.
The second half showed that bout experience counts, but the heart that Motley Crew put into their playing was exceptional, stand out players for them were Razil Dazzle, Princess Die and Brave Heartless but the whole team put so much into it its hard to pick out individuals. Hells Wives put together a strong pack with agile jammers such as Skatan, Tan Ya Hyde and Silence but then brought out double threats Hailstorm and Grenade to smash thru walls as jammers and hit hard as blockers, Glamerzon once again showed off her amazing abilities and got MVP.
Next up is Northland Nightmares Hells Wives vs Pirate City Rollers (Auckland) Broadside Brawlers on 27th Sept. SEE YOU THERE!
A great night of bouting with our nearest derby sisters HBC Rollers! Thank you so much for coming up to play us!
And of course humungous thanks to our refs, NSO’s, volunteers, friends, family and fans!
Next up: Hells Wives vs ARDL, ASB Stadium on the 28th September – it’s gonna be EPIC!!!
Hells Wives took on Dangerous Curves last Saturday night in front of a packed stand at ASB Stadium, and the girlz did not disappoint their home fans! It was a strongly fought bout with some very solid walls on both sides, but Hells Wives had the edge with a bigger bench and some fine jamming by Silence, Axl Slash-R and Tan-ya Hyde, and the points soon racked up!
The comments from our crowd was that it was a great game to watch – we’re really noticing that roller derby is starting to attract a growing fanbase here in Whangarei!
Many thanks to Mount Milita Derby Crew for making the trip up, and as always a huge thank you to our refs, NSO’s, volunteers, family, friends and fans 😀
Next up: Hells Wives vs Hibiscus Coast Roller‘s Bella Mafia, ASB Stadium, 27th July.

Saturday 4th of May kicked off Northland Nightmares Roller Girlz 2013 season and it was an action-packed evening all the way!
First up Northland Nightmares Derby Bratz held a demo game, with Team Yellow taking the game over Team Purple 97 points to 53. The Bratz had an awesome bout and they certainly showed some pretty damn fine derby skills out there!
Then May Mayhem ruled as the advanced players took the track. By half time Team Blood had a substantial lead, but Team Bruise pulled it back in the second half, and after a nail-biting final jam the final score as 162-160!
It was a hard fought, exhausting game with both teams playing with three blockers which opened up the game and made it a lot faster and easier for the jammers to break through…maybe Roller Derby needs to consider this as an option in future…?
A great opening bout and as always we couldn’t have done it without our amazing refs, NSO’s, volunteers, fans, friends and family – you are the bomb!
Next up it’s Hells Wives vs Mount Militia Derby Crew’s Dangerous Curves on the 29th of June! We can’t wait to play together as a team again – let’s hope it’s a repeat of last time we met Dangerous Curves and took out the win!
Northland Nightmares Roller Girlz are very proud to present Storm in a D Cup, our final event for the 2012 Season!
This event on the 27th of October is raising money for The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation and we will be going all out in various shades of pink to make sure this is a day to remember!
We’re hoping to have three bouts: Northland Nightmares Derby Bratz, a Fresh Meat bout and the main event will feature our advanced players, plus special guests from Mount Militia Derby Crew, Port City Rollers and HBC Rollers!
Watch this space for more details or check out our Facebook page closer to the date.
What’s been happening since the last post?
Well, Hells Wives hit the highway to Hellmilton and played Raggedy Angst, score 102-166 to Raggedy Angst….
Then Hells Wives hosted Hibiscus Coast Rollers’ Bella Mafia in what was Bella Mafia’s very first bout! Score, 362-16 to Hells Wives!
And our next bout, our intra-league final between Diva Destruction and Deathrow Dolls, well, it had to be cancelled (booo-hooo!) but the rematch is set for sometime in 2013!
What’s up next? Our final event of the season and it’s going to be AMAZING!
Our next bout is on the 11th of August and this time Hells Wives are off to Hamilton to take on Hellmilton Roller Ghouls’ Raggedy Angst, complete with the extremely loud and mega-enthusiastic Hells Wives Barmy Army in tow!
Last year Raggedy Angst took out the win when they paid a visit north; this time Hells Wives are ready to take that win back…hell yeah!
Bout is at Devils Skate Rink, Dey Road, Lugtons Park, Hamilton. Doors open at 6, game starts at 7pm. For more details check out the bout Facebook page event.
Saturday morning bright (well, some of us were…) and early it was off to Tauranga for our first bout of the year in three super fast minivans. With Pyscho Sis and Skatanic Mechanic leading the way in our much needed luggage truck it was a long four and a half hour haul south to our destination with several pit stops along the way.
8th Deadly Sin especially made an impression at McDonald’s at Drury BP Motorway Service Centre and of course who could forget the Mad Cow van at Matamata.
You just had to be there…
Once settled in our motel (we can highly recommend Fountain Court Motel, just not when 50 derby lovers are staying there all at once, we might disturb your sleep a little) it was off to Queen Elizabeth II Stadium to catch the curtain opener of Mt Militia’s Violent Fems vs Wanganui’s River City Rollers.
Then it was time for the Hells Wives to take the floor and take on Dangerous Curves. They had beaten Hells Wives 63-178 last year, but this year? It was gonna be different. There were impenetrable walls, there were tactics and skills and everything that our Head Coach Axl Slash-r had been drumming into us at practice was put IN to practice. Our jammers got through again and again and the more our Hells Wives Barmy Army shouted and chanted and yelled the more the score started to ramp up and up until the final score: an amazing, first ever, incredibly well fought win to Hells Wives, 140-81!!!
Celebrations went well into the night, with some karaoke, leg wrestling and much general derby mutual appreciation between teams, then Sunday, after lots of coffee and bearing up under hangovers, it was time to hit the road again for the journey back to Whangarei.
A huge thanks you to our hosts MMDC, refs, NSO’s and support staff and of course our completely awesome Hells Wives Barmy Army who were a lot bigger and just as mighty as last time!
Next up? It’s the first home game of the season; an exhibition bout at ASB Stadium in Kensington on the 19th of May! See ya there!
This weekend Northland Nightmares are hitting the road in Rentacheapy’s complete stock of minivans for an epic roadtrip to sunny Tauranga!
Our first game of the season is a repeat of our last game of 2011: Hells Wives vs Mount Militia’s Dangerous Curves but this time we’ve got a Hells Wives Barmy Army Support Crew almost four times bigger than last time!
We’re so excited, Saturday the 14th of April cannot come soon enough….
Kamo Christmas Parade was the final event on the Northland Nightmares’ 2011 schedule and we had a fantastic time skating down the main street of Kamo in front of a big crowd of people!
Our advanced players and the refs who were up to it did tricks and The Grinch did his usual grinchin’, scaring small children wherever he skated.
One of the best parts about the parade was having Axl-Slash-R and Solid Sarge fresh off the plane (and a two and a half hour drive north from Auckland to Whangarei) to join their fellow Nightmares! It wouldn’t have been the same without them – so great to have them back from playing in the first ever Roller Derby World Cup in Toronto; we are so, so proud of them!
(And just so you know, New Zealand came 8th, and Axl scored the first points on the board in the first game against the epic USA!!!)
The parade was followed by the Bratz privegiving and all the Bratz who played in October (the very first game of junior derby played in New Zealand!) got proper Children of the Corn and Satan’s Minion t-shirts, as well as a present from Santa who looked suspiciously like one of our refs….
Now it’s time to have a bit of a break but we will be keeping up our fitness courtesy of team trainer The Punisher. It’s been an amazing year and we can’t wait to see what 2012 holds for us all!
Merry Christmas to all our friends, family and fans and see ya next year at Kensington Stadium for the finest roller derby in the whole of Northland!
It’s official: the next best thing after derby? Derby road trips! It was Northland Nightmares’ last game of the season (and our only away game) and last Saturday morning the Hells Wives team and dedicated supporters hit the road for the five hour haul to Tauranga to play Mt Militia Derby Crew‘s Dangerous Curves at Queen Elizabeth II Stadium.
After settling into luxurious accomodation at The Golden Grove Holiday Park, it was time to check out the track and prepare for the game…
And the game? It was really tough and Hells Wives fought it out to the end, but our (much-improved) walls just couldn’t stop their awesome jammers and the final score was 63-178 😦
But, the good news is that reports from experienced spectators say there was definite improvement in strategy from our last bout, something that we will be working hard to improve on over the next few months! It’s not just about how good your physical skills are, it’s the mental ones that will win you the game – and that’s why derby ROCKS 🙂
Thanks to the awesome Mt Militia Derby Crew for hosting us and a big thanks to our amazing Hells Wives Barmy Army (“we may ave bin small, but we were mighty”) for travelling down to support us!
We can’t wait for the next derby road trip so rrrroll on next season!
Northland Nightmares Roller Girlz, coming to a stadium near you…

It’s the last game of our season and this weekend Hells Wives are hitting the road to play Mount Militia Derby Crew’s Dangerous Curves at Queen Elizabeth II Sports Centre in Tauranga!
Forget about the fireworks ‘cos you don’t wanna miss these bangs and crashes people!

Wow what a game! The Richter City Roller Girls All Stars sure took it to our Hells Wives – we could not breach their epic walls of blockerness! Final score 258 – 44 :-(. However, it was all worth it as the RCRD girls and guys were such an awesome bunch of people and it was so cool to have them travel all the way from Wellington to play us – thank you thank you thank you!
And a big thanks to our fans, friends and families, the refs, NSO’s, merchandise and door ladies and all the people that made this fantastic night happen.
