The 2014 season is coming to a close with only a few more games to go………..if you haven’t checked out the exciting sport of Roller Derby now’s the time, Northlands A team “Hells Wives” take on Pirate City Rollers (Auckland) B team the “Broadside Brawlers” this is going to be a pretty even battle of attrition which will have you on the edge of your seat – come along and see for yourself what our local roller girls can do to topple the might of Auckland!!!
Labour Weekend saw the Hells Wives team travel to Palmerston North for Derby Royale – 16 of the countries best teams coming together for a 2 day Derby-fest!
Day 1 – we played
Otautahi Roller Derby League (Christchurch) we won 121 to 72
Auckland Roller Derby League (Previous NZ champs) we lost 178 to 52
K-Town (Mixed Team from Kawerau, Whanganui and Levin) we lost 105 to 83
Day 2 – we played
Whakatane Roller Derby League we won 113 to 71
Taranaki Roller Corps we won 128 to 73
Mount Militia’s Dangerous Curves (Tauranga) – this was the second division final – we lost 140 to 85, we have previously beaten this team but with a lot of extra training and a few “helpers” from Wellington’s Richter City the Mount girls outclassed us, they got thru the “pool of death” to play us in the second division final and there was no team we would rather have played as we go a long way back with the Militia Crew!
This placed us 10th in the tournament (2nd in Division 2) – unfortunately losing to K-Town – coached by the newly elected NZ Team coach, cost us our 8th placing which was what we were hoping for – there was some controversy in the game – with some particularly harsh ref calls that sadly went against us, not to take anything away from the K-Town team though – they played hard AND strategically!
It was an intense experience, especially with 30 min bouts instead of the usual hour long games, we have come away from this tournament with our heads held high and are eager to get training for next year and try outs for the Roller Derby TEAM NZ which will be held on December 15th, we have made some new connections and we will see quite a few more teams travelling up north to play us in 2014.
THANKS TO ALL OUR SPONSORS, FANS AND HELPERS WHO MADE SURE WE GOT TO NUMBER 10
HELLS WIVES – 100% NORTHLAND and ONE HELL OF A TEAM!
Hells Wives took on Dangerous Curves last Saturday night in front of a packed stand at ASB Stadium, and the girlz did not disappoint their home fans! It was a strongly fought bout with some very solid walls on both sides, but Hells Wives had the edge with a bigger bench and some fine jamming by Silence, Axl Slash-R and Tan-ya Hyde, and the points soon racked up!
The comments from our crowd was that it was a great game to watch – we’re really noticing that roller derby is starting to attract a growing fanbase here in Whangarei!
Many thanks to Mount Milita Derby Crew for making the trip up, and as always a huge thank you to our refs, NSO’s, volunteers, family, friends and fans 😀
Next up: Hells Wives vs Hibiscus Coast Roller‘s Bella Mafia, ASB Stadium, 27th July.
Saturday 4th of May kicked off Northland Nightmares Roller Girlz 2013 season and it was an action-packed evening all the way!
First up Northland Nightmares Derby Bratz held a demo game, with Team Yellow taking the game over Team Purple 97 points to 53. The Bratz had an awesome bout and they certainly showed some pretty damn fine derby skills out there!
Then May Mayhem ruled as the advanced players took the track. By half time Team Blood had a substantial lead, but Team Bruise pulled it back in the second half, and after a nail-biting final jam the final score as 162-160!
It was a hard fought, exhausting game with both teams playing with three blockers which opened up the game and made it a lot faster and easier for the jammers to break through…maybe Roller Derby needs to consider this as an option in future…?
A great opening bout and as always we couldn’t have done it without our amazing refs, NSO’s, volunteers, fans, friends and family – you are the bomb!
Next up it’s Hells Wives vs Mount Militia Derby Crew’s Dangerous Curves on the 29th of June! We can’t wait to play together as a team again – let’s hope it’s a repeat of last time we met Dangerous Curves and took out the win!
Northland Nightmares Roller Girlz are very proud to present Storm in a D Cup, our final event for the 2012 Season!
This event on the 27th of October is raising money for The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation and we will be going all out in various shades of pink to make sure this is a day to remember!
We’re hoping to have three bouts: Northland Nightmares Derby Bratz, a Fresh Meat bout and the main event will feature our advanced players, plus special guests from Mount Militia Derby Crew, Port City Rollers and HBC Rollers!
Watch this space for more details or check out our Facebook page closer to the date.
What’s been happening since the last post?
Well, Hells Wives hit the highway to Hellmilton and played Raggedy Angst, score 102-166 to Raggedy Angst….
Then Hells Wives hosted Hibiscus Coast Rollers’ Bella Mafia in what was Bella Mafia’s very first bout! Score, 362-16 to Hells Wives!
And our next bout, our intra-league final between Diva Destruction and Deathrow Dolls, well, it had to be cancelled (booo-hooo!) but the rematch is set for sometime in 2013!
What’s up next? Our final event of the season and it’s going to be AMAZING!
Our next bout is on the 11th of August and this time Hells Wives are off to Hamilton to take on Hellmilton Roller Ghouls’ Raggedy Angst, complete with the extremely loud and mega-enthusiastic Hells Wives Barmy Army in tow!
Last year Raggedy Angst took out the win when they paid a visit north; this time Hells Wives are ready to take that win back…hell yeah!
Bout is at Devils Skate Rink, Dey Road, Lugtons Park, Hamilton. Doors open at 6, game starts at 7pm. For more details check out the bout Facebook page event.
Talk about hard out.
One busted fibula and one sprained ankle later, it’s one game each to Deathrow Dolls and Diva Destruction…
15th of September, ASB Kensington Stadium.
It’s the Final Countdown!
What a tight game our first intra-league bout turned out to be!
Now for a trip to Kerikeri for Round Two – DING! Can the Divas make it 1-1?
